Australian Scott Sunderland made a name for himself as a professional cyclist early on in his career. As a trusted domestique riding for stars like Stephen Rooks, Dimitri Konychev, Robert Millar, Jesper Skibby, Andrei Tchmil and Chris Boardman.
As a more seasoned pro he went on to share his experience with the younger generation of professional cyclists and in doing so helped Magnus Backstedt ride to victory in the biggest and toughest of Classics, Paris-Roubaix.
Scott’s affinity with the one-day classics is running like a red wire through his life in cycling. As he moved on to become a Sports Director with Bjarne Riis’ mighty CSC squad in 2005, he guided his team to consecutive victories in Paris-Roubaix with O’Grady and Cancellara.
After joint-directing the CSC-Saxo Bank team and Carlos Sastre to conquer the top of the podium in the Tour de France in 2008, Scott decided it was time for a new challenge and he accepted the Sports Management position in the Professional British Cycling Team Sky before deciding to return to Australia to spend more time with his family.Europe’s loss is our gain and now Scott is passing onto us all the knowledge gained from his many years as a cyclist and a director on the roads of Europe.
